Excess body weight leads to raised inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein (CRP) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR). Overweight Obesity also raises the pressure on weight-bearing joints such as knees, hips, ankles, etc..
Weight loss to achieve a healthy weight is desirable. for this purpose, energy intake must be less than energy expenditure. There are several varieties of foods containing beneficial fats that can help patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Fat consumed in the diet are broken down into 4 different types of saturated, trans, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids. saturated and trans fatty acids are considered harmful to the body on the other hand monounsaturated and polyunsaturated are desirable and beneficial. there is two types of Polyunsaturated fatty acids - Omega-3 and Omega-6.the fatty acids Omega-3s are found in fatty fish such as tuna, salmon, sardines, anchovies, herring, mackerel, etc. and in flaxseed, nuts, canola oil, etc. They help reduce the production of inflammation markers in the body.
Omega 3 fatty acids also relieve pain and stiffness in rheumatoid arthritis. These agents act similar to the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and also to prevent platelet aggregation.
Omega-6 fatty acids are found in the seeds, nuts and vegetable oils such as sunflower, safflower, corn, sesame, etc. omega-6 fatty acids are not considered to be beneficial in rheumatoid arthritis.
